I’m Mexican, Not Latino, Not Hispanic
When I tell people I’m Mexican, I often get a confused look. “But you don’t look Mexican,” they say. Or, “You speak English so well!” Or, “You’re not like other Mexicans I know.”
It’s as if they can’t reconcile the fact that I’m a Mexican American who is perfectly comfortable in my own skin and in my own culture.
I’m not sure why people are so surprised when they find out I’m Mexican. Maybe it’s because they have a certain image of what a Mexican is supposed to look like or act like. Maybe it’s because they’ve never met a Mexican American who is successful and well-educated.
Whatever the reason, I’m here to tell you that I’m not the only Mexican American who doesn’t fit into the stereotypical mold. There are plenty of us out there who are proud of our heritage and who are determined to succeed in life.
